Russell County Mighty Laker Football Season Comes to an End

The Mighty Laker Football Team finished the regular season undefeated and District Champs before falling to Warren East in the playoffs on Friday.

Although the Lakers had an abrupt ending to their season Friday night, the football team still had a great year overall. The Lakers had a shortened season due to COVID-19 and finished the regular season at 6-0. They won the District Championship this year for the first time since 2013 and felt great going into the playoffs. Unfortunately, Warren East was too tough of a team to defeat the second time around.

Senior, Nathan DeHart, says, “I’m very disappointed that we came up short in the playoffs, but it was great to be a part of something that hasn’t happened in Russell County in a while.”

“I felt we had a great season overall. Being cut short of a few games was tough for us but we tried to make the most of it. It didn’t end how we wanted it to but I still believe we had a great year,” senior, Collin Darnell, added.

COVID-19 precautions, virtual learning, cancelled and rescheduled games, temperature checks, face masks and limited crowds became new “normals” this football season. All new hurdles to make for an interesting, memorable journey.

“I felt like we had a really good season. In my mind its not really about the destination it’s the journey to how you got there. And this season really shows that. It’s been a tough year for everyone but we made the best out of it. I’m gonna cherish these moments and memories with my seniors forever. I can’t wait to see them do big things,” junior, Gavin Gossage, concludes.

Congratulations to our regular season undefeated, District Champion, Mighty Laker Football Team. This season will always be one to remember for so many different reasons. Above all else, the players and coaches have worked hard to prove that Mighty Laker Football is BACK.
