Cross Country Qualifies for State Back to Back Years!

Our Laker Cross Country Team

For the second year in a row, the Laker cross country team has qualified for their state meet; another record breaking milestone for this group of runners! The team finished 5th overall out of the 9 teams running at the region meet this passed Saturday at Wayne County’s course, making them the last eligible team to qualify for state. Top finisher for the team was senior, Justin Stearns, who placed 5th out of 69 runners; the highest individual finish Russell County has ever had at a region meet.

“It was cool, I definitely wanted to finish higher but for my last region ever, I’m not mad at it,” says Stearns.

Other region times toward the team score were Tyler Lulek (14) 18:50, Clayton Trosper (21) 19:20, Mason Buras (33) 20:41, and Lincoln Helm (52) 22:16. Bryson Trosper (24:28) and Nathan Bartrug (27:10) also competed. The overall team score is comprised of points assigned for the top 5 finisher’s times.

The state meet will be ran this Friday, October 30th, at Bourbon County. This is a different location from last year’s hosting site of “The Horse Park” in Lexington.

“Since it is a new course for us, it’s going to be difficult,” says Lulek. “But we have been training to start out at a strong pace and really attack the rolling hills and not lose momentum. The course can be a really fast one if we run it strategically.”

The team has been very successful this season with broken records, new PRs, and placing in the top ranks. We hope their success continues into the Bourbon County State Meet. We are so proud of the cross country team and want to wish them the best of luck on Friday. Go Lakers!
