Last Week in Laker Sports – Feb. 24

Last week in Laker Sports was another busy one.  Your Laker Swim team competed at the State Tournament, the Girls Basketball team had two games, and the Boys Basketball team also had two games.

The Laker Swim & Dive team travelled to Lexington on Friday and Saturday to compete in the 2020 KHSAA Swim & Dive State Championships. The Lakers had a total of 9 swimmers qualify to compete this year.  The Lady Lakers got things started on Friday morning with the 200 Medley Relay Team of Gaby Alvizo, Camryn Woodrum, Emma Rae Phillips, and Ally Stephens swimming to a 36th Place Finish.

Emma Rae Phillips was next to take the blocks in the 200 IM, where she set a new Laker Record of 2:15.69 and finished 20th in the competition.  Gaby Alvizo took to the pool next in the 100 Butterfly finishing with a personal best time of 1:01.49 and placed 30th.  Emma Rae Phillips competed next in the 500 Freestyle finishing 21st while lowering her Laker Record by 1.30 seconds to 5:24.73.

The final race for the day for the Lady Lakers was the 200 Free Relay of Emma Rea Phillips, Allie Mann, Camryn Woodrum, and Gaby Alvizo.  The Ladies finished their relay swim in Laker Record time of 1:47.16 finishing in 29th.  For the boys, Max Lawson competed in two individual events on Saturday morning.  Lawson swam the 100 Butterfly setting a new Laker Record of 56.46 while finishing 32nd in the State.  Max then swam the 100 Backstroke to a 33rd place finish.

The Laker Swim team once again had a great showing at the State Championship meet with personal best swims and new Laker records being set.  Coaches Debbie Loy & Glenda Prater want to thank this group of swimmers for their hard work, great attitudes, dedication, and leadership for the team this season

The Lady Laker Basketball team traveled to Pulaski County on Monday.  It was a tight game with the Lady Maroons, but unfortunately the Lady Lakers dropped the game in overtime 52-50.  The leading scorers for the game were Juliah Bault with 19 points and Star Marcum with 14 points.

Next, the Lady Lakers played the Top Rated 4th Region Girls team the Lady Purples of Bowling Green on Thursday.  With a comeback in the last minute of the game, the Lady Lakers came through with their best win of the year, with the final score of 43-42.  The Lady Lakers were led in scoring by Shiaynn Elkins with 17 points and Star Marcum with 9 points.  The Lady Lakers improve to 22-7 on the year.  The Lady Lakers will host the Lady Bulldogs of Clinton County Tonight at 6:00 pm for their first game in the 16th District Tournament.

On Tuesday, the Laker Boys Basketball team traveled to Danville to face top 5 12th Region team the Danville Admirals.  The Lakers came out good early, but ran out of steam and couldn’t get things going.  The Lakers lost to the Admirals 74-45.  The leading scorers were Scott Hamm with 14 points and Briley Hadley and Ryan Coffey with 6 points each.

On Friday, the Lakers traveled to Mt.Vernon and faced another 12th Region team, the Rockets of Rockastle County.  The Lakers had a decent game, but the Rockets prevailed thanks to a last second shot in overtime.  The final score of the game was 51-49.  Leading scorers for the game were Scott Hamm with 15 points and Briley Hadley and CJ Vonfumetti with 11 points each.  The Lakers fell to 13-16 on the year.  On Tuesday, the Lakers faced #3 seed Panthers of Cumberland County in the opening round of the 16th District Tournament at RCHS at 7:30 pm.
