Last Week In Laker Sports – Feb. 10

Last week in Laker Sports was another very busy one, with titles on the line in swimming and bowling.  Plus there was plenty of basketball action going on.  Let’s take a look at the results from last week…

At the Region 3 Swim Tournament in Elizabethtown, the Lady Lakers were led to a Runner-up finish for the meet by Emma Rae Phillips who brought home a Region 3 Championship in 200 IM, and a Runner-Up finish in 500 Freestyle.  Phillips set new Laker records in both events, and was named to the All-Region Team.

The Laker Boys swimmers were led by Max Lawson with runner-up finishes in 100 Backstroke & 100 Butterfly.  Lawson set a new Laker record in the 100 Butterfly and was also named to the All-Region Team.

The Lady Lakers qualified 2 relays and 2 individuals to swim at the KHSAA State Championship Meet at the University of Kentucky’s Lancaster Aquatic Center on February 21st.  The 200 Medley, & 200 Free Relay Teams qualified.
Emma Rae Phillips qualified in 200 IM and 500 Free.  Gaby Alvizo qualified in 100 Butterfly.

Max Lawson will be representing the Laker Boys Swim team in 100 Butterfly & 100 Backstroke.  We would like to congratulate the Swim team on great results at Regionals, and we wish them the best of luck at State!

In the KHSAA State Singles Bowling Tournament, Zach Kean came in 9th place overall for the tournament.  This was another great tournament for Zach and he represented Russell County High well.  We would like to say “great job” on another great year of Laker Bowling.

The Lady Laker Basketball team faced the Lady Hornets of Metcalfe County on Tuesday night.  The Lady Lakers came back and rebounded from their last game against the Lady Hornets, coming away victorious this time 57-50.  The leading scorers for the game were Star Marcum with 19 points and Juliah Bault with 16 points.  They improved to 5-1 in district play on the year.

The Lady Laker Basketball team traveled to Scott County on Friday, to play one of the top teams in the state.   Unfortunately the Lady Lakers fell to Scott Co. with a final score of 80-59.  With that result, the Lady Lakers stand at 20-5 on the year.  Next, the Lady Lakers play at Barren County on Tuesday night and host Adair County on Friday for Senior Night.

On Tuesday, the Laker Boys Basketball team faced 16th District foe Metcalfe County.  The Lakers, in a blowout fashion, beat the Hornets 67-46.  The leading scorers for the game were Jay MIlburn with 19 points and Scott Hamm with 14 points on the night.  The Lakers improved to 3-3 in their final District game of the year.

The Boys basketball team hosted Breathitt County on Friday and saw their  three-game win streak ended by the Bobcats.  The Lakers were down 19 at one point during the third quarter but the comeback effort fell short 64-60. The Lakers were led in scoring by Jay Milburn with 17 points and Scott Hamm with another 14 point game.  With that loss, the Lakers fell to 11-13 on the year.  On Saturday, the Lakers were supposed to travel to Logan County but that game was cancelled.  On Tuesday night of this week, the Lakers will travel with the Lady Lakers to Barren County.  Also, on Friday the Lakers will host Adair County in a boy/girl double-header for Senior Night.  On Saturday, the Lakers will host Jackson County for a freshman/JV/varsity triple header.
